One of our cricket brothers is unwell. Mat Martin was a talented middle order batsman and pace bowler who represented Northern Districts and Bay of Plenty at age group level in the mid-1990s while he was a student at Rotorua BHS. Mat played his club cricket for Rotorua BHS and Arawa CC before heading off to university to train as a teacher. On his return to Rotorua Mat played club cricket for Central CC before heading overseas, as so many cricketers do, to play and work in the UK. On his return to Rotorua Mat taught at Rotorua BHS and turned out for the school in the Baywide Premier competition. Mat is now living in the Eastern Bay of Plenty with his wife Tessa and their children and works as a teacher at Whakatane HS. Mat became unwell with the flu and is currently in Auckland City hospital in the Cardiovascular ICU. Those that have played with and against Mat will know what a competitor and fighter he is. Mat is in one hell of a fight right now and there is a Facebook page mat updates where you can leave messages of support for Mat and his family and share stories.Posted: Wednesday 22 August 2018
